Matthew 15:21-28 The Canaanite Woman

This audio file is a recorded reading (7 min 36 secs) from Wright’s commentary in the Gospel of Matthew. It appears Matthew includes the story of the woman to indicate her necessary understanding of Jesus’ unique ministry to the Jewish nation, even though her ethnicity was Canaanite. She understand’s that Israel’s Messiah will be a descendant of King David, that Israel’s Messiah will be a blessing not exclusively to Jews but to all nations, Gentile’s (dogs), and she understands that Jesus is that anticipated Messiah, which portrays a vivid contrast between her faith and that of Jesus’ disciples. She understands that God’s unique kingdom will be for everyone, regardless of background, where justice and mercy triumph. The banter Jesus and the unnamed woman have is not meant to be heard as condescending but instead shrewd.

May God bless us to learn Jesus’ story even more so that we can meet the challenges that face the growth of God’s kingdom.
